1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.a 2Just as it stands written in the prophet Isaiah: “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way.b 3A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; straighten his paths,’” 4so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.c 5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem kept going out to him. They were baptized by John in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins. 6John was dressed in camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
7John proclaimed: “One who is stronger than I am is coming after me. I am not good enough to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water, but he himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”d 9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and he was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10Jesus was coming up out of the water, and immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit coming down on him like a dove.e 11Then a voice came from the heavens: “You are my beloved Son; I delight in you.” 12Immediately the Spirit drove Jesus out into the wilderness.
13He was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by Satan, and he was with the wild animals. Angels were caring for him. 14After John had been handed over, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God.f 15He said, “The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” 16Jesus was passing by the Sea of Galilee when he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea, since they were fishers. 17Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.”g 18They left their nets at once and followed him.
19Going on a little farther, Jesus saw James son of Zebedee and John his brother. They too were in the boat, mending the nets. 20At once he called them. Leaving their father Zebedee with the hired workers in the boat, they went off after him. 21They went into Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus at once began to teach in the synagogue. 22His teaching astonished the people, for he was teaching them as one with authority, and not as the scribes did. 23Just then, in their synagogue, there was a man with an unclean spirit. He shouted, 24“Jesus of Nazareth, what do you want with us? Did you come to wipe us out? I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God!”hi
25Jesus rebuked the spirit. "Be quiet," he said, "and come out of him!" 26Then the unclean spirit convulsed the man, gave a loud shriek, and came out of him. 27The people were all so astonished that they kept asking each other, "What is this? A new teaching! He commands with authority even unclean spirits, and they obey him!"jk 28At once the news about Jesus spread everywhere, throughout the whole surrounding region of Galilee. 29Jesus and his companions left the synagogue and went straight to Simon and Andrew's house, with James and John. 30Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her right away.
31He went to her, took hold of her hand, and raised her to her feet. The fever left her, and she began serving them.l 32When evening came and the sun had set, people began bringing to Jesus all who were sick and all who were demon-possessed. 33The whole town had gathered at the door. 34He healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases and drove out many demons. Yet he would not let the demons speak, because they knew who he was.m 35Very early, while it was still night, Jesus got up and went out. He went away to a deserted place, and there he was praying.
36Simon and his companions went searching for Jesus. 37When they found him, they told him, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38Jesus said to them, “Let us go somewhere else, to the nearby country towns, so that I can preach there too. That is why I came.”n 39So he went all over Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. 40A man with leprosy came to Jesus, fell on his knees, and begged him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”o
41Jesus, moved to anger, stretched out his hand and touched the man. He said to him, “I am willing. Be clean!”p 42At once the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.q 43Jesus warned him sternly and sent him away at once. 44He told him, “Be sure you say nothing to anyone. Go instead, show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a witness to them.” 45But the man went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. Instead he stayed out in lonely places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.
