1Some days later, when Jesus came back to Capernaum, news spread that he was at home. 2So many people gathered that there was no room left, not even in the space by the door, and he was speaking the word to them.a 3Then some people came to him, bringing a paralyzed man, carried by four bearers. 4They could not bring the man to him because of the crowd, so they took off the roof over the spot where Jesus was. They dug through it and lowered the mat on which the paralyzed man was lying. 5Jesus saw their faith and said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”b

6Now some of the scribes were sitting there, reasoning in their hearts, 7“Why does this man talk this way? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins except God alone?”c 8Jesus knew at once in his spirit that they were reasoning this way within themselves. He said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier: to say to the paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up, take your mat, and walk’? 10But so that you will know that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins—” he told the paralyzed man, 11“I tell you, stand up, take your mat, and go home.”

12The man got up, and at once he picked up his mat and went out in front of everyone, so that they were all amazed and praised God, saying, "Never have we seen anything like this!" 13Jesus went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd kept coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14As he went along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus, who was sitting at the tax booth. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." Levi got up and followed him. 15Later, Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, and many tax collectors and sinners were at the table with him and with his disciples. For there were many of them, and they were following him.d 16When the scribes of the Pharisee party saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples, "Why is he eating with tax collectors and sinners?"e

17When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a doctor, but those who are ill do. I did not come to call the righteous, but to call sinners.”f 18Now John’s disciples were fasting, and so were the Pharisees. Some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why is it that John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19Jesus said to them, “Can the bridegroom’s friends fast while the bridegroom is with them? They cannot fast as long as the bridegroom is with them. 20But days are coming when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then, on that day, they will fast.g

21Nobody sews a patch of unshrunk cloth onto an old cloak. Otherwise the new patch pulls away from the old cloth, and a worse tear results. 22Nor does anyone pour new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and wine and skins alike will be lost. Instead, new wine goes into fresh wineskins.” 23One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began picking heads of grain as they made their way.h 24The Pharisees asked him, “Look, why are they doing on the Sabbath what is not lawful?”

25Jesus said to them, "Have you never read about what David did when he and those with him were in need and hungry? 26In the time of Abiathar the high priest, David went into the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which no one but the priests may lawfully eat. He also gave some to those who were with him."i 27Then Jesus told them, "The Sabbath was made for humankind, not humankind for the Sabbath. 28So the Son of Man is Lord even over the Sabbath."j
