1After the Sabbath had ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they could go and anoint Jesus. 2Very early in the morning on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3They kept asking one another, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb for us?” 4Then they looked up and saw the stone had been rolled away, for it was very large.a

5They went into the tomb and saw a young man in a white robe seated on the right side, and they were deeply alarmed. 6“Do not be alarmed,” he said to them. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, the one who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, this is the place where they laid him.b 7But go and say to his disciples and to Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.’” 8They came out and fled from the tomb, because trembling and amazement had seized them. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. ⟦They briefly reported all their instructions to Peter and those with him. After this, Jesus himself also sent out through them the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation, from east to west. Amen.⟧c

9⟦Jesus rose early in the morning on the first day of the week, and he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, the woman out of whom he had driven seven demons.d 10She went off and told it to those who had been with him, while they mourned and wept. 11They heard that he was alive and that she had seen him, but they did not believe it. 12After this, as two of them were walking out into the country, Jesus appeared to them in a different form. 13They too went off and told the rest, but the others did not believe them either. 14Later he appeared to the Eleven as they were at table. He reproached them for their unbelief and their hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen him after he was raised.

15Then he said to them, “Go into the whole world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16Whoever has believed and been baptized will be saved, but whoever has not believed will be condemned. 17These signs will accompany those who have believed: they will drive out demons in my name; they will speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up snakes, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them at all; they will place their hands on the sick, and the sick will recover.” 19So, after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven, and he sat down at God’s right hand.e 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through the accompanying signs.⟧f

Notes

  1. 4aGill and Clarke take this clause as the reason for the women's question in verse 3: the stone was too heavy for them. The BSB reads it as a contrast: “even though it was extremely large.”
  2. 6bOr “He has risen.” The Greek verb is passive in form, and that passive can also be read with an intransitive sense.
  3. 8cThe SBLGNT prints this shorter ending in double brackets after “afraid.” Its apparatus reports that Tregelles and the Byzantine text add verses 9–20 there instead, and the Greek text behind the NIV adds this ending and verses 9–20.
  4. 9dAdam Clarke reports that verses 9–20 are missing from Codex Vaticanus and anciently from many other manuscripts. The SBLGNT and Westcott and Hort print them in double brackets; the Byzantine text and Textus Receptus print them without brackets.
  5. 19eThe Byzantine text and the Textus Receptus read the Lord, without the name Jesus.
  6. 20fThe Byzantine text and the Textus Receptus add Amen at the end of this verse.
