1As soon as it was morning, the chief priests, together with the elders and the scribes and the whole Council, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, took him away, and handed him over to Pilate. 2Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “You say so.”a 3The chief priests kept accusing him of many things.b 4Once more Pilate asked him: “Have you no answer at all? Look how many things they are accusing you of!” 5But Jesus gave no further answer at all, so that Pilate was amazed. 6Now at the festival Pilate used to release one prisoner for the people, whichever one they asked for. 7A man called Barabbas was held bound with the rebels who had committed murder in the uprising. 8The crowd came up and began asking Pilate to do for them what he usually did.c
9Pilate replied, “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?” 10He knew, after all, that the chief priests had handed him over out of envy. 11The chief priests, however, stirred up the crowd to get Pilate to release Barabbas for the people instead. 12Pilate spoke to them again: “Then what do you want me to do with this man you call the King of the Jews?” 13Again they shouted, “Crucify him!” 14Pilate asked them, “Why? What wrong has he done?” But they shouted even louder, “Crucify him!” 15Pilate wanted to satisfy the crowd, so he released Barabbas for them. He had Jesus flogged and then handed him over to be crucified. 16The soldiers led Jesus off into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called together the whole cohort.d
17They dressed him in a purple robe, wove a crown of thorns, and put it on him. 18Then they began saluting him: "Hail, King of the Jews!" 19They kept striking his head with a reed and spitting on him. They would go down on their knees and bow low before him.e 20When they had finished mocking him, they took the purple robe off him and dressed him in his own clothes. Then they led him out to crucify him. 21They forced a passer-by who was coming in from the country to carry the cross of Jesus. He was Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus. 22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull. 23They offered him wine that had been mixed with myrrh, but he did not accept it.
24Then they crucified him and divided his clothes among themselves, casting lots for them, to see who would take what. 25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.f 26The inscription giving the charge against him said, “The King of the Jews.” 27They crucified two robbers with Jesus, one on his right, the other on his left. 28Not in the SBLGNT; see the note.g 29The people passing by kept hurling insults at him, shaking their heads as they said, “Aha! You who were going to destroy the temple and build it again in three days, 30save yourself—come down from the cross!”
31In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he cannot save himself. 32Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also kept taunting him. 33When noon came, darkness fell over the whole land until three in the afternoon.h 34At three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which, translated, means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"i 35When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, "Look, he is calling Elijah."
36Someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Leave him alone," the man said. "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down." 37But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. 38And the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two, from the top down to the bottom. 39When the centurion who stood facing Jesus saw how he breathed his last, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"j 40Some women were also watching from a distance, among them Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Joses and James the Less, and Salome.k 41These women had followed Jesus and cared for his needs when he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were there as well.
42Evening had already come. Since it was Preparation Day, the day before the Sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council. He too was waiting for the kingdom of God. He dared to go before Pilate and ask for the body of Jesus. 44Pilate was amazed that Jesus was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him whether Jesus had been dead for some time.l 45When Pilate had learned this from the centurion, he granted the dead body to Joseph. 46Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Jesus down, wrapped him in the cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock. He rolled a stone against the tomb's entrance. 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where Jesus had been laid.
