1The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were now two days away. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to seize Jesus by some trick and kill him. 2For they said, “Not during the festival, or there will be a riot among the people.” 3Jesus was in Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper. While he was reclining at table, a woman came in carrying an alabaster jar of very costly perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume over his head. 4Some of those present were indignant among themselves: “Why has this perfume been wasted? 5This perfume could have been sold for upward of three hundred days’ wages, and the money given to the poor.” They turned on her in anger.ab
6Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why are you making trouble for her? She has done a good thing for me. 7You always have the poor among you, and whenever you wish, you can do good to them. But you will not always have me. 8She did what she could. She anointed my body ahead of time for burial. 9Truly I tell you, wherever in the whole world the gospel is proclaimed, what this woman has done will also be told in her memory.”c 10Then one of the Twelve, Judas Iscariot, went off to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them. 11They were glad to hear it, and they promised to give him money. And Judas kept looking for a way to hand Jesus over at the right moment.
12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day the Passover lamb was sacrificed, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where would you like us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?"d 13So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, "Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14Whatever house he enters, say to its owner, 'The Teacher says: Where is my guest room, so that I may eat the Passover there with my disciples?' 15The owner himself will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there."e 16The disciples set out and went into the city. They found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 17As evening fell, Jesus came with the Twelve.
18While they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19They grew distressed, and one after another they said to him, “Surely not I?”f 20He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve, one who dips into the bowl with me. 21For the Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written of him. Yet woe to that man, the one through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! That man would have been better off if he had never been born.” 22While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf, said a blessing, and broke it. He gave it to them and said, “Take it; this is my body.”g 23Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it.
24“This is my blood of the covenant,” he said to them, “poured out for many.h 25Truly I tell you, I will never drink from the fruit of the vine again until that day in the kingdom of God when I drink it new.” 26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. 27Jesus told them, “All of you will fall away, because it is written: ‘I will strike down the shepherd, and the flock will be scattered.’i 28But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29But Peter said to him, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30Jesus said to him, "Truly I tell you, today, this very night, before the rooster has crowed twice, you yourself will deny me three times." 31But Peter kept protesting vehemently, "Even if I must die together with you, I will never deny you." All the others were saying the same thing too. 32They came to a piece of ground called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit down here while I pray." 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be overwhelmed with alarm and distress. 34He told them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Remain here and keep watch."j
35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground, and he prayed that, if it was possible, the hour might pass him by. 36He said, “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want.”k 37Then he came back and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Were you unable to keep watch for one hour? 38Keep watch and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”l 39He went away again and prayed, saying the same words. 40Again he came back and found them sleeping, because their eyes were very heavy. They did not know what answer to give him.
41Jesus came back the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough. The hour has come. See, the Son of Man is being handed over into the hands of sinners.m 42Get up. Let us go. Look, the one who is handing me over is near." 43Just then, while Jesus was still speaking, up came Judas, one of the Twelve. With him came a crowd carrying swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, scribes and elders. 44Now the one who was handing Jesus over had given them a prearranged signal, saying, "The man I kiss is the one. Seize him and lead him away under guard." 45As soon as he arrived, he went straight up to Jesus and said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him.n
46Then the men laid hands on him and seized him. 47But one of those standing nearby drew his sword and struck the high priest's slave, cutting off his ear.o 48Jesus said to them, “Have you come out to arrest me with swords and clubs, as though I were a bandit? 49I was with you day after day in the temple, teaching, yet you did not seize me. But this is happening so that the Scriptures may be fulfilled.” 50Then they all deserted him and fled.
51A young man was following along with Jesus, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They seized the young man,p 52but he left the linen cloth behind and fled naked. 53They took Jesus away to the high priest, and the chief priests, elders and scribes all gathered. 54Peter had followed him at a distance, all the way into the high priest's courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself in the firelight. 55Meanwhile the chief priests and the whole Council kept looking for testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they found none.q 56For many gave false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree.
57Then some men stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58“We heard him say, ‘I will tear down this temple made by human hands, and in three days build another, one not made by human hands.’” 59Yet even on this point their testimony did not agree. 60Then the high priest stood up in the middle of them and questioned Jesus: “Do you have no answer to give? What is it that these men are testifying against you?” 61But Jesus kept silent and gave no answer at all. The high priest questioned him once more: “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”r 62Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”s
63Then the high priest tore his clothes and asked, “Why do we still need witnesses? 64You heard the blasphemy. What do you decide?” All of them condemned him as deserving death. 65Some began to spit on him, to cover his face, to punch him, and to say to him, “Prophesy!” Then the guards took charge of him, slapping him.t 66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high priest’s servant girls came along. 67She saw Peter warming himself, looked at him, and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68But he denied it, saying, “I do not know or understand what you are talking about.” Then he went out into the entryway, and a rooster crowed.u
69The servant girl saw him and began again to tell the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders again said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, since you too are a Galilean, and the way you speak gives you away.”v 71But he began to call down curses and to swear an oath, “I do not know this man you are talking about.” 72At once the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” He broke down and began to weep.w
