1They reached the other side of the sea, the region of the Gerasenes.a 2As soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. 3He lived among the tombs. No one could bind him any longer, not even with a chain. 4For he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he had torn the chains apart and smashed the shackles. No one had the strength to tame him. 5Night and day, among the tombs and in the hills, he was constantly screaming and gashing himself with stones.
6When the man saw Jesus some way off, he ran and fell down before him. 7He shouted at the top of his voice, “Jesus, Son of God Most High, what do you want with me? I charge you by God, do not torment me!”b 8For Jesus had been saying to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of the man!” 9Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, because we are many.”c 10He kept begging Jesus earnestly not to send the spirits out of the region. 11Now a large herd of pigs was grazing there, near the hill. 12So they begged Jesus, “Send us into the pigs, so that we can enter them.”d
13He gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs. The herd stampeded down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them, and they drowned in the sea.e 14The herders fled and told the news in the town and in the countryside. Then people came to see what had happened. 15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed, the one who had once had the legion. There he sat, clothed and in his right mind, and fear seized them. 16Those who had seen it told the people in detail what had happened to the man who had been demon-possessed, and about the pigs as well. 17Then the people began begging Jesus to leave their district. 18As Jesus was boarding the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging to be with him.
19But Jesus would not allow it. Instead he said to him, “Go home to your own people, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you, and the mercy he has shown you.” 20So the man left and began to proclaim in the Decapolis everything Jesus had done for him. Everyone was amazed. 21When Jesus had crossed in the boat back to the other shore, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the sea. 22Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came up. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23He pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”fg
24So Jesus set out with him. A large crowd kept following him and pressing in on him from every side. 25Now there was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. 26She had suffered much at the hands of many doctors and had spent all she owned. Yet she had not been helped at all. Instead, she had grown worse. 27She had heard about Jesus. In the crowd she came up behind him and touched his cloak. 28For she kept saying, “If I touch even his clothes, I will be made well.”h 29At once the source of her bleeding dried up, and she knew in her body that she had been healed of her affliction.i 30At once Jesus knew in himself that power had gone out of him. Turning around in the crowd, he asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31His disciples answered him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and still you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” 32But he went on looking around to see the woman who had done this. 33Then the woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came forward and fell at his feet. She told him the whole truth. 34He told her, “Daughter, your faith has made you whole. Go in peace, and be free from your affliction.”j 35While he was still speaking, some people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter has died. Why are you still troubling the Teacher?” 36But Jesus, paying no attention to what was being said, told the synagogue leader, “Do not be afraid. Only believe.”k 37He let no one go along with him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
38They came to the synagogue leader's house, and Jesus saw a commotion, with people weeping and wailing loudly. 39He went in and said to them, "Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died; she is sleeping."l 40They laughed at him in scorn. But he sent them all outside. Then he took along the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in to where the child was.m 41He took hold of the child's hand and said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I tell you, get up." 42At once the girl got up and started walking around, for she was twelve years old. Immediately they were overcome with amazement. 43Jesus gave them firm orders that no one was to know about this, and he said she should be given something to eat.
