1Jesus was leaving the temple when one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What stones, and what buildings!” 2Jesus answered him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here on another; every one will be torn down.” 3As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew questioned him privately, 4“Tell us, when are these things going to happen? And what will the sign be when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5Jesus began to tell them, “Watch out that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he,’ and they will lead many astray.a

7When you hear of wars and reports of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but that is not yet the end. 8For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. In place after place there will be earthquakes, and there will be famines. These are the beginning of the birth pains.b 9As for you, be on your guard. They will hand you over to councils, and in synagogues you will be beaten. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them. 10To all the nations the gospel must first be proclaimed. 11When they lead you away and hand you over, do not worry in advance about what to say. Instead, say whatever is given to you at that time, for it is not you who say it, but the Holy Spirit.c

12Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father will hand over his child. Children will turn against their parents and put them to death. 13Everyone will hate you because of my name. But whoever endures to the end will be saved. 14But when you see the abomination that brings desolation standing where it is not right to stand (let the reader take note), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.d 15Whoever is on the roof must not come down or go inside to get anything from the house.e 16Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get a cloak. 17How terrible it will be for pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days!

18Pray that it may not happen in winter.f 19For those days will be a time of distress such as there has never been from the beginning, when God created the world, until now, and never will be again. 20If the Lord had not cut the days short, no one would survive. But because of the chosen ones, whom he chose, he has cut the days short. 21Then, if someone says to you, 'Look, the Messiah is here!' or 'Look, he is there!' do not believe it. 22For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders to lead the chosen ones astray, if possible.g 23But you, be on guard. I have told you everything ahead of time.

24But in those days, after that distress, the sun will be made dark, and the moon will not shed its light. 25The stars will fall out of the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26Then people will see the Son of Man come in clouds with great power and glory. 27Then he will send out the angels and gather the elect from the four winds, from the farthest edge of the earth to the farthest edge of the sky.h

28Now learn the lesson of the fig tree: when its branch has already grown tender and is putting out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29So you too, when you see these things taking place, know that he is near, at the very door.i 30Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away before all these things take place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, yet my words will never pass away. 32But as for that day or hour, no one knows it, not even the angels in heaven, not even the Son, but only the Father.

33Be on your guard and stay alert, for you do not know when the time will come.j 34It is like a man who set out on a journey. When he left his house, he put his slaves in charge, each with an assigned task, and he ordered the doorkeeper to keep watch.k 35So keep watch, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming back—in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you asleep. 37What I tell you, I tell everyone: Keep watch!”

Notes

  1. 6aThe Greek has only ‘I am’; English needs a word to complete the claim, so ‘he’ is supplied.
  2. 8bAfter “famines,” the Byzantine text (Robinson-Pierpont) and the Textus Receptus add “and troubles.” The SBL Greek New Testament, followed here, does not have these words.
  3. 11cAfter “what to say,” the Byzantine text (Robinson-Pierpont) and the Textus Receptus add “and do not prepare it.” The SBL Greek New Testament, followed here, does not have these words.
  4. 14dIn the SBLGNT the participle “standing” is masculine, which may point to a person, though “abomination” is neuter. The Byzantine text and Textus Receptus add “spoken of by Daniel the prophet.”
  5. 15eThe Byzantine text and Textus Receptus read “come down into the house.”
  6. 18fThe Byzantine text and the Textus Receptus read "that your flight may not happen in winter."
  7. 22gThe Byzantine text and the Textus Receptus read "even the chosen ones."
  8. 27hThe Byzantine text and the Textus Receptus read “his angels” and “his elect.” This translation follows the SBL Greek New Testament, which reads “the angels” and “the elect.”
  9. 29iOr it is near. The Greek states no subject; some translations supply 'it'. 'He' takes the Son of Man of verse 26 as the subject.
  10. 33jThe Byzantine text (Robinson-Pierpont) and the Textus Receptus add “and pray” after “stay alert.”
  11. 34kGreek douloi, people owned by a master; many translations render the word “servants.”
