1As they were drawing near to Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany by the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2and told them, “Go into the village that lies ahead of you. As soon as you go in, you will find tied up there a colt that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ answer, ‘The Lord needs it and will soon send it back here.’”a 4So they went off and found a colt tied up at a door, outside in the street, and they untied it. 5Some of the people standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?”
6The disciples answered just as Jesus had told them, and the people let them go. 7The disciples brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8Many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread branches that they had cut from the fields.b 9Those who went ahead and those who followed kept shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord! 10Blessed is the coming kingdom of David our father! Hosanna in the highest!”c
11Jesus came into Jerusalem and entered the temple. He looked around at everything, and since the hour was already late, he left for Bethany with the Twelve. 12The next day, after they had left Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13From a distance he saw a fig tree that had leaves, and he went over to see whether he might find anything on it. But when he came up to it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14Then he said to the tree, "Never again may anyone eat fruit from you." His disciples were listening.d
15They came to Jerusalem. Jesus went into the temple courts and began driving out those who were selling and buying there. He overturned the money changers' tables and the chairs of those who sold doves. 16He would not let anyone carry a container through the temple courts.e 17As he taught, he said to them, "Is it not written, 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations'? But you have turned it into a den of robbers." 18When the chief priests and the scribes heard this, they began looking for a way to destroy him. For they feared him, since the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. 19When evening came, Jesus and his disciples left the city.f
20In the morning, as they were passing by, they saw that the fig tree had withered from the roots up. 21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23Truly I tell you, if someone tells this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and be thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in the heart but believes that what that person says will happen, it will be done for that person.g 24That is why I tell you, whatever you ask for as you pray, believe that you have received it, and you will have it.h
25Whenever you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive, so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.” 26Not in the SBLGNT; see the note.i 27They came back to Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, scribes, and elders approached him. 28They asked him, “On what authority are you doing these things? Or who granted you this authority to do them?”
29Jesus said to them, "I will put one question to you. Answer me, and I will tell you what authority I have for doing these things. 30Was John's baptism from heaven, or from human beings? Answer me." 31They discussed it among themselves, saying, "What shall we say? If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Then why did you not believe him?'j 32But shall we say, 'From human beings'?"—they were afraid of the crowd, for everyone truly held John to be a prophet. 33So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." Jesus replied, "Neither will I tell you what authority I have for doing these things."
