1Around that time a large crowd had gathered once again, and the people had nothing to eat. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said to them,a 2“I feel compassion for the crowd, because they have stayed with me three days now and have nothing to eat. 3If I send them off to their homes hungry, they will faint along the way, and some of them have come from far away.” 4His disciples answered him, “How could anyone find enough bread here in this remote place to feed these people?” 5Jesus asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” “Seven,” they said. 6He directed the crowd to sit on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks and broke them. He kept handing them to his disciples to serve. They served them to the crowd.
7They also had a few small fish. Jesus blessed them and gave orders for these to be served as well. 8The people ate and were satisfied, and they gathered up seven basketfuls of broken pieces left over.b 9About four thousand people were there. Then Jesus sent them away.c 10At once he boarded the boat with his disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha. 11The Pharisees came out and began to argue with him. They asked him for a sign from heaven, to test him. 12Sighing deeply in his spirit, Jesus said, "Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, this generation will be given no sign at all."d 13He left them, boarded the boat again, and went off to the other side.
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15Jesus warned them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against the Pharisees’ yeast and Herod’s yeast.” 16So they kept arguing with one another about having no bread.e 17Jesus knew what they were talking about, and he asked them, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Do you have hardened hearts? 18Do you not see, though you have eyes? Do you not hear, though you have ears? And do you not remember? 19How many baskets full of the broken pieces did you pick up when I broke those five loaves for the five thousand?” “Twelve,” they replied. 20“And how many baskets full of the broken pieces did you pick up when I broke those seven loaves for the four thousand?” “Seven,” they said.f
21He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”g 22They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch the man. 23Jesus took hold of the blind man’s hand and brought him outside the village. He spat on the man’s eyes, laid his hands on him, and asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24The man looked up and said, “I see people—they look like trees, walking around.” 25Then Jesus laid his hands on the man’s eyes once more, and the man saw clearly. His sight was restored, and he could make out everything distinctly, even at a distance.h 26Jesus sent him home, saying, “Do not even go into the village.”i 27Jesus set out with his disciples for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. As they went along, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”
28They answered him, "Some say you are John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." 29Jesus asked them, "And you? Who do you say I am?" Peter replied, "You are the Messiah." 30Jesus sternly warned them to tell no one about him.j 31Then he began teaching them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering and be rejected by the elders, by the chief priests and by the scribes, and that he must be killed and rise again after three days.k 32He said this plainly. Peter drew him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But Jesus turned around, looked at his disciples and rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "For your mind is not on God's concerns but on human concerns."
34Then Jesus called the crowd and his disciples to him and said to them, “Anyone who wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 35For anyone who wishes to save his life will lose it, while anyone who loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it. 36For what good is it for a person to gain the whole world and yet forfeit his life?l 37For what could a person give in exchange for his life? 38For if, in this adulterous and sinful generation, anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will in turn be ashamed of that person when he comes with the holy angels, in his Father’s glory.”
